2012 Adobe Design Achievement Awards

December 8th, 2011

It’s almost that time of the year again, and yours truly is part of the pre-selection panel for what is sure to be another fun filled year of screening some really awesome entrees (as well as some not so great ones.)

See, that’s me on the judges page: http://www.adobeawards.com/us/about/judges/

The first batch of stuff comes in for review at the end of January.

Android Layout Woes

November 21st, 2011

When we started this WKDU app a few weeks ago we set two goals for ourselves: The first was to have a functioning and properly aligned Play button by Thanksgiving, and the second was to have a beta version of the app done by New Years. Thanksgiving is in 3 days and as of this morning I had an off-centered “Play” button that does nothing.

Looking into the actual code needed to play a streaming station, I managed to get that part working in less than an hour. Hey, that’s like 50% of the app right there, right? Using a simple MediaPlayer object you can set up a stream in like, 10 lines of code. The layout on the other-hand is proving to be the most difficult part of Android programming in general. The whole idea of using different views and layouts, all configured in XML is a lot more like web design than I thought it would be. It seems like if you use the mentality that the XML is a CSS/HTML file, and all your code is basically Javascript that can interact with it — well then it makes more sense.

I don’t know, tonight will be spent reading and watching a bunch more Tutorials on layouts.

Yet Another Redesign

November 9th, 2011

So, yet again I have gone and redesigned my site. The idea this time is to try and keep any actual projects documented below in one of the few categories I have added. All the other random stuff will just be added as blog posts (and obviously if they start materializing into something useful, they will be added to the Projects section below.)

The last few weeks I have been busy working on a mobile app for 91.7 WKDU with @alejandroid as well as attempting to get this redesign online. More info on the app can be found below.

Anyway, hopefully once I make this post it will show up on the front page… fingers crossed!

First Alternativa3D 8 Test

June 25th, 2011

With Adobe’s new Stage3D “Molehill” stuff getting all awesome and whatnot lately, I decided to check out some of the other API’s that support it. I initially started messing around with Away3D’s APIs cause they were the first ones to come out with them, but now there are a lot more. I have a Papervision background, and Away3D is by far the closest you will get to Papervision, but I figured I should still try out some of the others.

Alternativa3D 8 is what was used to make the Adobe MAX Racer demo, so obviously I wanted to play around with this for awhile, but like I said, Away3D beat them to the punch with releasing an alpha, so I’ve been using that.

Anyway, I just took the basic Hello World example that Alternativa provides and made a few changes. Seems pretty straightforward enough, I guess only time will tell which API is the “best.”

Obviously the below example will only work if you have the Flash Incubator installed.

No Time for Love Dr. Jones

May 24th, 2011

Man, I’ve been so busy for the last 2 years I forgot I owned a website till I realized I was still paying for it every 6 months.

After winning the ADAA award for being so BALLER in Beijing (see below post) I’ve just been jobing it up at Lockheed Martin as their resident “All things Flash/Flex/AS3 related” guru (I think that might be my official title these days.) I’d tell you more, but unless you have a secret clearance from the DOD it’ll be filled with mad [blanks].

I have been attempting to work on some AIR for Android stuff in my spare time…but that is few and far between lately. Adobe decided they needed someones expertise in the field of “All things Flash/Flex/AS3 related” and have asked me to become a pre-selection panelist (read as “pre-judge but still judge”) for the 2011 Adobe Design Achievement Awards, so I’ve been doing that too. Spoilers: A lot of people are bad at making things. Hopefully they will fly me out to Taiwan for the actual awards, or at least give me some legit CS5.5 stuff. Who knows.

Maybe I’ll get around to updating this site at some point. I do wanna see whats so great about this HTML5 thing everyone is talking about. #teamflash

Google Wave – The Gmail of 2009

October 1st, 2009

The entire internet seems to be all over Google’s balls once again with their latest closed beta, Wave. For some reason this seems to be so much more popular than Google Voice is, despite still being a closed beta too. If you have been anywhere on the internet in the past 24hrs you know what I mean.

Twitter is still going out of control right now trending the crap out of Google Wave, pretty much all the fourms I vist are plastered with people looking for invites, but hell, even I would kill for an invite right now! I mean c’mon, it’s Google! This feel like 2004 when Gmail went into it’s first beta stage and the internet erupted into a frenzy over it. I don’t remember what I did, but I managed to get an account there pretty quickly.

The question is will this actually be worth it in the long run? Or is this going to turn into another Chrome where we pretty much never really hear about it again. I guess only time will tell…or perhaps if I had an account I could *wink wink*

Finally got some innernets…

September 14th, 2009

Now that I’m all moved in to my new place in South Philly, Comcast finally decided to come out and give me my internet and TV. After waiting from 1-5pm (what the hell kind of time frame is this) on Monday I decided to call at 5:30 when no one showed up. The lady proceeded to tell me that my appointment time had changed to Tuesday from 1-3pm and that someone should have called to tell me this. Thanks a lot Comcast…

So Tuesday rolls around and they were actually on the ball. The dude showed up at 1:06 and jacked me in. Now I got internet and TV…about time.

Site is live!

August 18th, 2009

Even though I still have a bunch of stuff to do, I figured I’d might as well move everything to the main domain…I mean a half done site is still better than that horrible Flash thing that was up before.

I’m sure there is some stuff that’s still broken and my portfolio page isn’t done yet…but whatever. You get the general jist of things. Leave me a comment when you find something that is broken (unless leaving comments is broken…)
